There are two kinds of people on this earth who don’t deserve the air we breathe. One of them is sex offenders and the other is child abusers. These types of people are cut from the same tainted cloth because often they are guilty of both those charges. After all the publicity the convicted rapist has been stirring up after being caught for the kidnapping of a little girl something like 11 years ago who he locked up in a dirty shed in his back yard, child abuse stories again came to the forefront of news.
Child Abuse Stories There is nothing more disturbing to me than child abuse stories, except actual child abuse. I find that I cannot watch TV shows or read book that involve child abuse with out becoming sick to my stomach. Child abuse stories make me extremely angry and helpless at the same time. I have a very strong opinion about it. I just don’t understand people who can do this to their children, or any child for that matter. Children should be protected, not harmed.
There are two main problems. One is that people don’t want to involve themselves. They see something that bothers or disturbs them but instead of investigating it or reporting it they come up with some logical explanation to explain things away. I would rather be the person who cried wolf than find out I should have reported it and did not. Two, child abuse is usually hidden. Children are trained not to tell or admit it is happening. Child abuse stories need to be heard, and be used to wake people up. Make them understand that it is really happening. Child abuse is one of those things people would rather not know about. Maybe one store being shared will help others identify a child who needs help, and motivate them to offer that helping hand. As adults it is our job to protect children, even when they are not ours.
A teacher-friend of mine, Erika, decided on an teaching at an elementary school in the inner city over a private school in the suburbs because she knew she could make more of a difference there. She had previously been a social worker in an urban area and knew the types of abuse which occurred within the city limits. Erika said that while there were times she reported abuse, and gave those kids as much love and attention as she could while they were in her charge, there were cases of child abuse and neglect that went undetected and therefore, unreported. These children ran to her with arms flung wide every morning, desperate for her approval and hug. Erika believed that was the best remedy for the kids who suffered severe neglect and condemnation from their families, and I have to agree with her.
