- My mother suffered a psychotic break while delivering me in 1951 and believed I was not human, that I was the devil's child sent as a curse upon her life. Her abuse of me was continual and pervasive, and lasted from my 1st breath until I left home at 18. My experience and research has convinced me that the Harvard Medical School researchers are correct when they state that severe early child abuse changes the developing brain as it adapts to a malevolent instead of a benevolent world.
